If you’ve been following me for a while, then you know last summer I really got into gardening. Living in the heart of a big city often means cramped living. I may lack a yard, but living in an urban environment doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your love of gardening.

Thanks to Burpee’s, the first name in home gardening, I was able to collaborate with them this year to expand my green thumb. They are a company of exclusive varieties of vegetables, herbs, seeds and flowers that are ideal for today’s consumer. Known and trusted for years, Burpee is helping to inspire a new generation of gardeners and home chefs with their selection of leading garden vegetables, herbs and flowers, available as plants at garden retailers. The Burpee name is synonymous with the crunchiest cucumbers, tastiest tomatoes and most flavorful herbs. Growing your own vegetables and herbs is a great way to ensure you have flavorful, bright and nutritious veggies on the table.

Here are my top 3 urban gardening tips to add a greenery to your space:

1. Grow Your Plants In Containers

If you don’t have much yard space like myself, growing plants in containers is the way to go. With containers, you can grow pretty much everything from lettuce to tomatoes to peppers. Use smaller containers for more shallow-rooted crops like carrots. Larger root vegetables (i.e. tomatoes and beans) will benefit from bigger containers to accommodate their needs.

Don’t forget, container plants usually require more watering to prevent them from drying out. As long as there is adequate drainage, you can grow any vegetables that your heart desires.

2. Water Your Plants Early

Did you know plants absorb the most water in the cool early hours of the day? Don’t avoid waiting until mid-day since the water will evaporate even before it touches the roots. If you don’t have time in the morning, wait until the sun sets down and hydrate your plants in the evening.

3. Space Matters

For plants to grow, I can’t stress enough about using containers. They are a vital component of urban gardening since most of us only have a balcony or rooftop to work with. In order to help improve drainage and airflow, raise your containers about an inch or two off the ground with blocks.

Make sure to look into hanging baskets since they also come in handy to make the most of your space. For smaller apartments, not only are they useful, it also functions as a décor.
